Hexagram 51 The Arousing: (Shock, Thunder) the beginning of things in the east, the spring.

“Laughing words: ha, ha” the words suggest the sound of thunder and are symbolic of inner calm in the midst of the storm of outer movement.

Welcoming the Return of Spring

March heralds the return of spring. The vernal equinox (equi nox or equal night) occurs in California on March 20 at 10:36 am Pacific Time.  At this moment the sun is positioned exactly over the equator. At this point in the natural cycle the hours of daylight begin to exceed those of night in the northern hemisphere.  It is a time of renewal--the return of life energy after the retreat of winter.  It is a time to plant seeds and initiate new growth.

As the I Ching, The Book of Changes, reminds us, change and reawakening energy is not without tension and may even be frightening in its intensity. Hexagram 51, The Arousing, is symbolic of the powerful movement of spring energy. “The Arousing means beginning, arising.”  The image “shows the upward movement of electricity and thunder, making itself heard again in the spring.” We are cautioned to remain calm and alert in this unsettled period of great change.  When March

roars in with the bluster and thunder of the “lion” we expect peaceful “lamb” weather to follow at the end of the month.  It can just as easily go the other way.  New energy is unpredictable without and within.  It is a time to be aware and awake, ready for anything.

Arousing our own vitality to match that of the coming spring, we’ll call forth new energy through animal guides found in the chakras.

Chakras are energy centers in our bodies.  The word chakra is Sanskrit for wheel, reflecting the circular motion of chakra energy. Several forms of yoga practice, especially kundalini yoga, center on arousing and nourishing vital life force through the chakras.

Visualizing the energy inherent in each chakra is a common meditation practice. Individual colors are associated with the light energy of each chakra. Symbolically chakras may be envisioned as flowers, opening and closing. The seven chakras arising from the base of the spine to the space just above the head are those included in Seena’s meditation for the creation of the Companion suit of the SoulCollage deck.  SoulCollage chakra meditation invites us to imagine a particular animal in each energy center. As we identify these companion animals, we honor them by creating cards.

SoulCollage at Davis Community Church

SoulCollage will be offered Sunday, March 12 and Sunday, March 19 from 10-11am in the Fireside Room as a part of Davis Community Church’s reflections on spiritual change during Lent.  Sara will facilitate.  All are welcome. DCC is located at the corner of 4th and C Streets in Davis, across from Central Park.

Healing

As many of you know I’ve been spending a lot of time with my foot propped up on a stack of pillows following a broken bone and surgery to repair it.  My Dr. Scholl card made at last month’s SoulStudio for Heroes and Heroines has served me well. (He even accompanied me in the operating room!)  Heartfelt thanks to all for your loving support and positive messages!!!!
