…the kings of antiquity closed the gates
Hexagram 24 Return (The Turning Point)
The new moon of December 1 and Mercury’s return to forward motion on the 3rd signal the beginning of this holiday season. December is bursting upon us--lights, decorations, parties and the rush to buy presents. It’s a beautiful time of year and also a time that can be more than a little overwhelming. So what exactly are we doing here at the end of our calendar year when darkness envelops us as we wait for the solstice to start the lengthening of days? If we are attuned to
our inner seasonal rhythms, we will be doing just that—waiting. It is no coincidence that the religious seasons of Advent and Hanukah parallel older winter myths that deeply honor the process of waiting—a waiting that is calm and peaceful, filled with intention, hope and certainty for the return of the light.
In traditional Advent observance, the time before Christmas was reserved for spiritual introspection. Parties, feasting and celebrations began on the 26th and continued for the Twelve Days of Christmas culminating in the exchange of gifts on Three Kings Day, January 6. Hanukah ritually reflects the slow building from darkness to light by starting with the light of one flame and adding another each night during for eight successive evenings. Our consumer culture front loads the holiday season by joining traditional social celebrations to the commercial calendar for the entire month of December combining parties and events with extended time for shopping. What, then, shall we do with the mythical observance of a time for stillness and intention? Can we have it both ways? Choosing to be still at our center helps us remember and acknowledge the psychic need to wait in the darkness of the year in preparation for the return of light. Taking time for stillness in the midst of the holiday season may be as simple as walking in the slanting light of early dusk or witnessing the rising of the sun a little later each morning. Some of us may focus on artwork, poetry, music or meditation to observe nature’s rhythm of rest. The hexagram of Return reminds us that the return of the light “is not brought about by force” but is “characterized by devotion” which allows groups to “come together in full public knowledge and in harmony with the time”. I wish you all a very happy December and a beautiful, balanced holiday season with time for “closing the gates” and looking quietly within as well as time to gather with friends and loved ones in joyful celebration.
